About Follow the Bottleneck

Data centres can secure capital, GPUs, water, land and fibre - but what about electricity?

Billions of dollars are being allocated to the build out of artificial intelligence.

Approvals are moving. The grid is not.

Follow the Bottleneck is a weekly newsletter focused on the artificial intelligence path to power.

For investors curious about how the high-voltage transmission network can absorb data centre large loads, the supply chain dynamics playing out and the opportunities emerging to meet compute demand.

Follow the Bottleneck draws upon Australia’s National Electricity Market as a live case study, tracking the tension of where ‘bytes meet atoms’. It is our way of sharing what we are seeing as the emerging opportunities to accelerate connections.

We started Follow the Bottleneck after long careers in the energy sector. We saw that investors with capital committed to the energy system were being lumped in with the government, policy and regulatory audience - served content written for someone else.

This newsletter seeks to change that and is honest about what is happening on the ground rather than what the transition narrative says it ought to be.

Why Now

  • Data centre demand is arriving faster than the network can absorb.

  • Connection timelines are blowing out and projects are being repriced.

  • The gap between government policy and the laws of physics is growing.
